Kashi — also known as Varanasi or Banaras — is the spiritual heart of India and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Every street here breathes mythology; every step is a pilgrimage. Below are the sixteen experiences no visitor should miss.
1. Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The crown jewel of Kashi and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The newly opened Vishwanath Corridor offers spacious darshan and direct ghat access. Best visited at 4 AM Mangala Aarti or 7 PM Sapta Rishi Aarti.
2. Dashashwamedh Ghat — Ganga Aarti
Witness the world-famous Ganga Aarti every evening at 6:45 PM. Seven priests in saffron robes perform a synchronized fire ritual to the river goddess. Book a boat for the ultimate VIP view.
3. Assi Ghat — Subah-e-Banaras
The southernmost main ghat hosts "Subah-e-Banaras" — a daily sunrise gathering with classical music, yoga, and Vedic chants beginning around 5 AM. Magical.
4. Sarnath
Just 10 km away, Sarnath is where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa, Ashoka Pillar with the Lion Capital, and the Archaeological Museum are unmissable.
5. Manikarnika Ghat
The eternal cremation ghat. Hindus believe dying or being cremated here grants moksha (liberation). Visit with respect — photography is prohibited.
6. Banaras Hindu University (BHU)
India's largest residential university and a heritage campus. Don't miss the marble New Vishwanath Temple inside campus.
7. Tulsi Manas Temple
Built where Goswami Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas. Walls are inscribed with verses; mechanized dioramas depict Ramayana scenes.
8. Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple
Founded by Tulsidas himself. Famous for Tuesday and Saturday evening Hanuman Chalisa recitations.
9. Durga Temple (Durga Kund)
A red 18th-century temple in Nagara style with a sacred kund (pond). Especially vibrant during Navratri.
10. Bharat Mata Temple
Unique in all of India — instead of an idol, the sanctum holds a giant marble relief map of undivided India. Inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi.
11. Ramnagar Fort
Across the Ganges, the 18th-century sandstone fort of the Maharaja of Banaras houses a fascinating museum of vintage cars, weapons, and royal artefacts.
12. Alamgir Mosque
A stunning Mughal-era mosque built by Aurangzeb on a hill above Panchganga Ghat — panoramic views of the river.
13. Nepali Temple (Kathwala)
A wooden pagoda-style temple modeled on Pashupatinath in Kathmandu. Intricate Nepalese woodwork.
14. Annapurna Devi Temple
Right next to Vishwanath. Goddess of food and nourishment. Don't miss the gold idol darshan during Annakut festival.
15. Kaal Bhairav Temple
Kashi's kotwal (chief guardian deity). It is said you must seek Kaal Bhairav's permission before any other darshan in Kashi.
16. Kashi Ropeway
India's first urban ropeway (opening 2025) — a 3.75 km aerial cable car connecting Cantt railway station to Godowlia. Aerial darshan of Kashi from 50 m above.
Plan at least 4 days for a meaningful Kashi experience. Pair temple visits with sunrise boat rides, evening aartis, and at least one classical music performance at Assi Ghat. Hara Hara Mahadev!
