Held 15 days after Diwali on Kartik Purnima, Dev Deepawali transforms all 84 ghats of Varanasi into a river of light — over a million diyas illuminate the steps in a single evening.
When?
Kartik Purnima (full moon of Kartik month) — typically mid-November. Aarti begins at 5:30 PM and continues till late night.
The Legend
It is believed that on this day, the Devas (gods) themselves descend from heaven to bathe in the Ganges and celebrate the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura.
What to expect
Lakhs of clay diyas lining the ghats, mass Ganga aarti synchronized across all ghats, fireworks, classical music, decorated boats. The crowd is enormous.
