Maha Shivratri — "the great night of Shiva" — falls on Phalgun Krishna Chaturdashi (Feb/March). Kashi celebrates with all-night vigils, jagrans and the famous wedding procession of Shiva.
The Vivah Procession
A grand baraat is taken out from Mahamrityunjaya temple. Devotees in costume play Shiva, Parvati, ghosts, gods. The procession winds through the city to Vishwanath.
Masan Holi
The day after, sadhus play Holi at Manikarnika cremation ghat using ash from pyres — one of the most surreal spectacles in India.
All-Night Vigil
Stay awake the entire night chanting "Om Namah Shivaya". Four prahar pujas are done at midnight intervals at all major Shiva temples.
